Science
Science provides a way of answering interesting and important questions about the world. Scientific knowledge is contestable, and is revised, refined and extended as new evidence arises. Scientific knowledge can be organised as an interrelated set of models, theories, laws, systems, structures and interactions. It is through this body of knowledge that science provides explanations for a variety of phenomena and enables sense to be made of the natural world.
It is the goal of the Science Faculty at St Gregory's College to actively engage students in the process of thinking scientifically to develop, undertake, process, evaluate and report on investigations to lead to a deeper understanding of the world around them. In the compulsory Years 7-10 the Australian Curriculum provides opportunity for students to use scientific inquiry to develop their understanding of scientific ideas and concepts, as well as the importance of scientific evidence. Students are challenged to respect differing viewpoints on scientific issues, and to work ethically and honestly. In developing their scientific skills, students learn content from the key areas of the Living, Chemical and Physical Worlds as well as Earth and Space.
In the senior school we currently offer a range of optional courses to suit both ability and interest levels. Students that have demonstrated an interest in Science are encouraged to continue the broard study of Senior Science which, as in Years 7-10, incorporates a range content knowledge. Students that have demonstrated academic success in Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics are encouraged to consider studying these challenging courses for their HSC.
