Agriculture at St Gregory's

The study of Agriculture at St Gregory's was established in 1926 when the College was originally set up to educate boys in the skills of farming.  Today the subject is centred around the study of the agricultural enterprises of beef cattle, sheep and wool, viticulture and horticulture.  The College also runs an active show program based on registered cattle (Limousin and Shorthorn) and sheep (Corriedale) studs, which provides our students with experience working with and competing against industry standards.

In Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8), Agriculture is studied as a part of the Mandatory Technology course where the faculty delivers units in the areas of agriculture, food technology and plant production as well as developing skills in plant propagation, problem solving and cooking.

In Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10), students focus on the management of the school farm and the enterprise of beef cattle, prime lambs, wool, horticulture and viticulture.  They develop practical skills in the operation and management of these enterprises as well as examining the potential markets for the products produced.

In Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12), the focus changes to examining the role of Agriculture in the Australian and International economies as well as looking at what farming will look like in the 21st century.  A second subject, Primary Industries, is offered as a vocational course and focusses on the development of skills around caring for animals, operating machinery, fencing, working in the Agricultural industry and Work, Health and Safety in the industry.
